Featuring the hero of this dish, smoked chicken, this recipe also includes potatoes, garlic, onions and a medley of spices. Although spices and masalas are not common in North-East Indian cooking, this dish could be considered to be somewhat of a fusion of various elements from the cuisines of some parts of India. Passed down from different generations and cultures, smoked chicken with potatoes, tied together with spices creates a delectable combination of ingredients blending into one hearty meal. 


  • 1/2 kg smoked chicken, cut into medium-sized pieces 

  • 3 medium sized potatoes, cut into medium-sized chunks  

  • 2 tbsp mustard oil (or any vegetable oil)

  • 1 tbsp garlic, minced 

  • 1 medium onion, minced

  • 3 bay leaves

  •  1 tsp meat masala

  •  1 tsp garam masala 

  • 1 tsp turmeric 

  • 1 or 1/2 tsp pepper 

  • Water

  • Salt, to taste


  1. Heat the oil in a pan or wok. Add the onions, garlic and ginger to the oil, and sauté for 2-3 minutes, or until softened.

  2. Add 3 bay leaves and sauté it for a while.

  3. Add the garam masala, followed by the meat masala and turmeric. Stir it well.

  4. Add the potatoes and smoked chicken along with 1-2 cups of water. Season with salt and pepper. Let it simmer on low heat until cooked.

  5. Serve it with hot with steamed rice.

This recipe is simple and packs a whole lot of flavour with the smokiness of the meat and the spiciness of the masalas. Enjoy this dish with a steaming plate of rice.
