Potato Salad with Black Sesame paste, comfort food meets bold flavours in this uniquely savoury twist on a potato salad.Potato salad is a beloved dish, but this version brings it to life with the nutty richness of black sesame paste and the crunch of fried onions, garlic, and ginger. It’s spicy, earthy, and full of texture — perfect as a side or a light stand-alone meal.
Ingredients:
- 4 medium potatoes, boiled and cut into bite-sized cubes
- 1 large onion, finely sliced
- 1-inch fresh ginger, minced4–6 garlic cloves
- Minced2–3 red chillies, slit (adjust to taste)
- 2 tbsp oil (preferably mustard oil for extra flavor)
- 2 tbsp black sesame seeds paste
- 1 tbsp lemon juice (optional)
- Salt, to taste
Instructions:
- Prepare the Tadka (Tempered Mix): In a pan, heat 2 tablespoons of oil over medium heat.
- Add the sliced onion, ginger, garlic, and red chillies.
- Fry for about 7–8 minutes, stirring occasionally, until golden brown and crispy. Set aside.
- Make the Black Sesame Paste: Dry roast black sesame seeds lightly in a pan until aromatic. Let them cool. Grind them into a smooth paste in a blender — no water needed. The natural oils should release and form a thick, shiny paste.
- Assemble the Salad: In a large mixing bowl, add the boiled potato cubes.
- Add the black sesame paste and gently mix until all pieces are well coated.
- Add the Tadka: Pour the crispy onion, ginger, garlic, and chilli mixture over the potatoes, including all the flavoured oil.
- Toss gently to coat evenly.
- Add salt to taste and a squeeze of lemon juice if using. Toss again gently.
This bold and flavourful potato salad can be served warm or at room temperature. It makes a great side dish to meat, rice meals, or can be enjoyed on its own as a light and satisfying snack.
